Route;

From Scarborough to Ravenscar and then Robin Hoods Bay.

Length:

Approx. 17 miles there, one way.

Four hours

Information:

This route is part driving, part walking. The walking section being around the charming fishing village of Robin Hoods Bay. You can't take your car down into the village and it therefore involves a very steep walk down and back up again (see photo above). If you have difficulty in climbing up steep hills then you won't fully enjoy this route. However, Robin Hoods Bay is well worth the visit if you can make it.

Allow at least an hour for your visit to Robin Hoods Bay. There is a whole section of questions relating to the buildings and features around the charming fishing village. After completing them you can rest in one of the pubs or cafes and watch the world go by. The village is very well preserved, though perhaps a little twee for some. There is a rather bohemian atmosphere about it.

Historical Information

This was a smugglers' coast, if ever there was one. Gin, tea, brandy, tobacco, all brought ashore through 'the baytown' as Robin Hood's Bay was known, during the 18th century. The fishing village was so notorious that a detachment of dragoons was sent in 1774 to assist the excise men, who were subject to violent resistance whenever they tried to seize contraband.

During the railway construction boom of the 19th century, a line was built between Scarborough and Whitby. Closed in the 1960s, its route is now a bridleway. When the 'navvies' arrived to build this railway, a special police station had to be built in Robin Hoods Bay to uphold law and order. This building is now called 'Beckfield House'. Look out for it while you are there.

The hotel at Ravenscar was where a certain Bram Stoker stayed and developed the idea for a novel called 'Dracula'. The town of Whitby, further up the coast, was where, in the book,  Dracula landed in England.
